چکیده

We use a family of embedded atom model potentials all based on accurate quantum-mechanical calculations to study the relation between Peierls stress and core properties of the 1/2a^111& screw dislocation in bcc tantalum ~Ta!. We find that the Peierls stress (sP) is a function of the core-polarization curvature ~P! near the equilibrium core configuration. Our results suggest that the computationally available quantity P is a useful criterion for designing high-performance materials.

Calculating the Peierls energy and Peierls stress from atomistic simulations of screw dislocation dynamics: application to bcc tantalum

We introduce a novel approach to calculating the Peierls energy barrier (and Peierls stress) based on the analysis of the dislocation migration dynamics, which we apply to 1/2a〈111〉 screw dislocations in bcc Ta. To study the migration of screw dislocations we use molecular dynamics with a first principles based embedded-atom method force field for Ta. We first distinguish the atoms belonging to...

Atomistic simulations of kinks in 1Õ2aŠ111‹ screw dislocations in bcc tantalum

Two types of equilibrium core structures ~denoted symmetric and asymmetric! for 1/2a^111& screw dislocations in bcc metals have been found in atomistic simulations. In asymmetric ~or polarized! cores, the central three atoms simultaneously translate along the Burgers vector direction. This collective displacement of core atoms is called polarization. In contrast, symmetric ~nonpolarized! cores ...

First-principles Calculation on Core Structures and Peierls Stress of a Screw Dislocation in BCC Iron

Predicting atomistic properties of a dislocation is a first step toward an understanding of plastic behavior of materials, in particular BCC metals. The core structure and Peierls stress of a screw dislocation in BCC iron have been determined using the first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory with the large-scale supercell containing 231 atoms. For the a0/2[111] scre...

First-principles Calculation on Screw Dislocation Core Properties in BCC Molybdenum

Predicting atomistic properties of a dislocation is a first step toward an understanding of plastic behavior of materials, in particular BCC metals. The core structure and Peierls stress of a screw dislocation in BCC metals have been studied over the years using the first-principles and empirical methods, however, their conclusions vary due to the inefficiency of the methods. We have executed f...

Ab initio study of screw dislocations in Mo and ta: A new picture of plasticity in bcc transition metals

We report the first ab initio density-functional study of <111> screw dislocation cores in the bcc transition metals Mo and Ta. Our results suggest a new picture of bcc plasticity with symmetric and compact dislocation cores, contrary to the presently accepted picture based on continuum and interatomic potentials. Core energy scales in this new picture are in much better agreement with the Peie...
